alarm over the reemergence of a viral infection - monkeypox
Amid the covid-19 pandemic a new critical and viral infection is on the rise, over 100 cases of the monkeypox has been discovered in the US, Europe, Israel and several other countries, at the time of writing this, over 11 countries have reported confirmed cases of the monkeypox infection.The monkeypox virus is believed to spread by rodents such as rats and squirrels. The monkeypox virus currently has two main strains, the West Africa strain and the Congo strain. And just like covid-19 there is no specific treatment for monkeypox, although it's  fatality rate is  about 3-6%. Expert also believe that it can also be spread through sexual contact. As the name suggest the virus first emerged in monkeys kept for research in the late 1950s. You can catch the infection if an infected animal bites you or if you touch an infected animal.Monkeypox is similar to smallpox but less contagious than smallpox and causes less severe illness. According the WHO website, Monkeypox was first identified in human in the 1970s in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in a 9-year-old boy in a region where smallpox had been eliminated in 1968, and has since then spread to other African countries such as, Benin, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Gabon, Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and South Sudan.The disease disappeared for 40 years after being eradicated by vaccination in the 1980s only to reappear in Nigeria in 2017. In 2017, monkeypox broke out in Nigeria, with over 500 suspected cases and over 200 confirmed cases and a case fatality ratio of approximately 3%. Since then cases continue to be reported until today.Now, in 2022, amid the covid-19 pandemic, the world is experiencing a surge of the monkeypox infection. The symptoms to watch out for includes, headache, fever, chills, sore throat, malaise, fatigue, rash, and lymphadenopathy and according to WHO website, the incubation period of monkeypox is usually from 6 to 13 days but can range from 5 to 21 days. Another important thing to note from the WHO website is, the monkeypox virus can be transmitted from one person to another by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials such as bedding etc.
